Despite an increasing body of evidence suggesting that food fortification can play a significant role in reducing micronutrient malnutrition, further evidence is needed to fill important information gaps, and to guide successful policy and programme development and implementation.

In collaboration with Agrinatura, 2FAS is conducting research around themes prioritised at the EU Nutrition Seminar in 2018. Findings will help contribute to the knowledge base and best practice on all forms of food fortification initiatives.

Global and national action and commitment

2FAS engages with stakeholders to mobilise action for food fortification. At national level, we sensitise and support governments to provide a regulatory environment for fortification legislation (an example of this is our partnership in Kazakhstan. At global level, we engage with partners such as non-governmental organisations, United Nations agencies, donors and the private sector to promote food fortification as part of the 2030 agenda towards sustainable food systems and healthy diets.

We also raise awareness among MEPs and EU colleagues by hosting workshops, contributing to the evidence base, and supporting guidance materials.

In 2020, 2FAS supported the EU to produce a Guidance Note on Food Fortification, which provides a rationale for, and measures to, integrate food fortification across diverse, complementary sectors (for example, agriculture, social protection, health, nutrition).
