Second global summit on food fortification

On Thursday 29th April at 2pm CET, the Second Global Summit on Food Fortification is hosting its fourth webinar in the 2021 virtual series. The webinar will take stock of progress made in industrial fortification across regional economic communities, and examine areas for future development.

This is an opportunity for all of us working or interested in industrial fortification to participate, share our knowledge, and gain insights from experts in the field.

The 90-minute webinar, co-hosted by the European Union and USAID, will be moderated by Leonard Mizzi, Head of Unit, Sustainable Agri-Food Systems and Fisheries, European Commission, Directorate-General International Partnerships.

Speakers:

Shawn Baker, USAID
Dora Panagides, 2FAS

Namadou Keita, West African Health Organization
Carol Tom, Consultant
Mónica Guamuch, Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama
Omar Dary, USAID

Eighty-six countries have legislation to fortify at least one milled cereal grain. However, different fortification requirements between countries often create practical difficulties for intercountry trade. Regional harmonization standardizes compliance and procedures, and strengthens the capacity of governments and the private sector to implement sustainable fortification programmes.

By taking part in this webinar, you will:

  1. Understand how regional harmonization helps address regional food fortification needs.

  2. Determine the benefits of regional harmonization on trade, in-country enforcement of fortification standards, and generation of evidence on effectiveness of the interventions.

  3. Learn from regional regulatory bodies on the areas of interventions that are lagging behind and need further attention.

The Second Global Summit on Food Fortification is co-hosted by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the Micronutrient Forum and HarvestPlus. To join us on 29th April, register at GAIN’s website.
