Panel discussion on food fortification and the Sustainable Development Goals at the European Parliament

The 2FAS team organised a panel discussion at the European Parliament on 5 February, 2020. Co-hosted by MEP Marco Tarabella, the event was attended by participants from international organisations, the private sector, non-governmental organisations and the EU Parliament.

The keynote address was given by Lawrence Haddad, the Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Co-Founder of the Global Nutrition Report, and World Food Prize Laureate 2018.

The other speakers were: Helena Guarin, Head of Sector Nutrition at DEVCO C1; Steve Godfrey, Director of Policy and External Relations at GAIN; and Professor Daniel Sila, the Dean of the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences at Jono Kenyatta University in Kenya. Projessor Sila’s country perspective presented some alarming statistics relating to micronutrient malnutrition in Kenya, as well as positive results from an EU-funded project which supports small- and medium-scale Kenyan maize millers to fortify their products.

Through presentations and a Q&A session, participants were informed about food fortification, its importance as a development strategy, and how and why the EU should continue to support and scale up global food fortification efforts.
